Company's History

The The Harmony Volunteer Fire Company was organized in 1874 and the records of the company are sketchy, and it is unclear who the men where and how many started the the company. The company orginally served harmony borough and the outlying areas. Then in the early thirds the company formed an agreement with Lancaster TWP and Jackson TWP to cover the two townships. The company was incorporated in 1933 and is owned solely by its members. The company's first piece of equipment was a hand pulled cart bought by the borough for the company in 1913. old fire station and trucks

Old Harmony truck

The company's first motorized fire truck was a 1933 diamond Te with a piston driven pump. The first rescue was a 1957 GMC panel truck and the first tank truck was a gas truck converted to a fire truck. The company had a jeep as the first brush truck which was bought off of a member and converted over to some form of a brush truck. Many of the fire trucks the company owned in the early years were built by the members of the company till the NFPA standards got to a point were the company had to buy trucks from approved manufactures. The company begun in a long-gone building on Main Street, right across from it's present location. The bell out of the tower in that building is in front of the present fire station.

Around the 1930s the company moved to Doc Stewart Hall at the corner of Main and Mercer streets. A pole building was built on the site of the first station or wear the Sid Bream building sits today. To house the carnival equipment for the yearly carnivals that the company hosted to raise money. In the seventies the company stoped hosting a carnival and put fire apparatus in that building because Doc Stewart Hall was not high enough for the trucks. In 1986 the company built the truck room that house the trucks today and in 1994 added on a meeting room to the companys present day station.

The Company has had a long and rich history for the past 129 years and we the company plans on being hear to serve the community for another hundred years.

Family is a big part of this organization. With not as much interest in firefighting now of days with the younger generation. We have to almost rely on family members, and friends of the family of the members of this company, to keep membership up. This company is made up of father and son combinations The most know father and son of the company are two people who has held the office of chief the longest. Lou Sapienza held the office for 19 years and his son Tim is in his 25th year as Chief.
